Raising Twenty Billion Part II: What you can do

After reading my previous post, you may want to know more about what you can do to lessen the impact of animal agriculture on the environment. Here are a couple of options that I have come up with:

Eat less meat, or different types of meat

As I mentioned previously, switching from beef to beans significantly cuts down your carbon footprint; even switching from beef to chicken has a positive impact. There are also plenty of meat substitutes, which are worth experimenting with, such as QuornTM. Recently there have been developments in sustainable cultured meats, my friend Serena recently wrote a great post on it and I hope to explore this topic in future blog posts.

Find ways to make change outside of your diet

Raising awareness of the impacts meat production has on the environment is really important, you could do this through discussing it with your friends or writing a blog post for example. If you wanted to make greater change, you could try writing to your MP; there was a workshop here at UCL this week on how best to engage your MP on issues that concern you regarding climate change. At the Paris Climate Summit, the UK agreed to reduce their agricultural emissions, perhaps ask your MP how the UK is planning to do this.

Let me know what you think in the comments and if you can think of other ways to help!
