Obama on Food and Climate Change

This week I came across an article that was adapted from a talk given by Barack Obama at the Seeds & Chips Global Food Innovation Summit this summer. I would really recommend giving it a read, or, if you would prefer to watch the whole speech, here is the video (Obama appears around 9mins in and his speech ends around 24 mins in).  With the US recently participating in COP23 but still intending to withdraw from the Paris agreement, it is easy to feel pessimistic about the future, but this is a hopeful speech that really made my day. I hope you enjoy reading and/or watching and let me know what you think in the comments!

Now that we have a basic understanding of the environmental impacts  of agriculture and how unsustainable our current system is, I am going to start to look at these problems in more detail, explore ways to solve them and discover how we can best feed the future! As Cowspiracy  in particular highlights, the way we farm cows now poses serious threats to the environment through their greenhouse gas emissions, land use, water use and waste production. I will look at meat production in greater detail in my next post, but for now here is some food for thought: Helen Harwatt and colleagues published a paper this summer, in which they calculated that if all Americans replaced the beef in their diet with beans, then the USA could almost meet its 2020 greenhouse-gas emission goals. The Diet that Helps Fight Climate Change

I came across a really great video published by Vox this week, which I would strongly recommend watching (here is the accompanying article too). It provides more explanation to my previous  'Raising Twenty Billion' posts in showing how making small changes to your diet can make a big difference in helping fight climate change. Food Packaging: A Brief Overview

Photo © iStockphoto.com/littlen So far on the blog I have just looked at the ‘food’ part of feeding seven billion; this week I thought I would briefly explore the packaging associated. Since the start of The Great Acceleration , the amount of food packaging we produce, use and throw away has dramatically increased. For example, the mass production of plastics began in the 1950’s and has since become a huge environmental issue , with up to 12.7 million tonnes , a large part being food packaging, ending up in our oceans each year. On land, only around two-thirds  of food packaging is recycled.
